Nominator's project description

Professor Dr. Ken Wagener is George Butler Professor of Polymer Chemistry at the University of Florida. He also is Director of the Center for Macromolecular Science & Engineering on campus. His group is perhaps best known for the body of research leading to Acyclic Diene Metathesis (ADMET) Polymerization. Other fields of study include "chain propagation/step propagation polymerization" chemistry to produce nanophase separated materials, and single crystal, 100% reversible 2+2 cycloaddition chemistry, the latter work being done in collaboration with Professor Wegner's group at the MPI in Mainz. During his stay in Mainz. he will focus on the synthesis of new functional materials for fuel cell applications and dispersions. In one project, the ADMET technique will be combined with the existing expertise in the field of membrane materials for fuel cells to obtain polymers with improved proton conductivities. A second topic aims at the formation of latex particles in dispersions by using the ADMET technique. Mainz recently established new emulsions systems allowing the use of water sensitive catalysts. The use of catalysts in this process should result in new polyolefin particles with adjustable properties such as size and film-formation ability, essential for the development of materials for coatings and paints.
